West Hollywood, Los Angeles County
West Hollywood became a city in 1984, when renters, older residents and a large gay community joined forces to incorporate, and its first council was the first in the country with a gay majority. The city packs about 35,000 people into less than two square miles. The Pacific Design Center, whose cobalt glass building of 1975 is nicknamed the Blue Whale, is its largest landmark.
